The video-artwork A toothless grin references the idea of a void as an uneasy feeling of emptiness in our everyday lives, which is in part caused by constant digital media consumption and a corresponding, increasing alienation from the natural world. Jakubek uses an experimental video format, to explore how the Digital has been shaping our relation to nature, its representation and experience by humans. Drawing on art forms and genres like performance, fashion, spatial sound, poetry and music video, she develops a narrative of human estrangement from nature as a result of one’s ongoing absorption into the Digital. In her work, the natural world becomes increasingly mechanised, deformed and abstracted; the artistic tools used range from drone videography to fully computer generated images produced through the employment of machine learning in the form of generative adversarial network (GAN) technology.
