Fikri Anıl Altıntaş grew up as the son of Turkish parents in a small town in central Germany. His father worked as a Turkish teacher and his mother was a cleaner. It was a childhood in the midst of social housing blocks, marked by an urgent desire to be “German” and the bitter disappointment surrounding the reality of living in Germany. There was a growing desire to be seen, and to find his own way, as a Turkish Muslim man. His relationship with his father ultimately raised one question above all else: what does masculinity mean in general and how can it be understood and lived beyond the clichés?

Amid entrenched narratives, Fikri Anıl Altıntaş searches for the nuances in his debut novel. Radically honest, he looks back on his own life and on his family history to better understand the present.

Im Morgen wächst ein Birnbaum was published in April 2023 by btb Verlag. After the reading, visitors will be able to have their books signed by the author.
