Postcolonial art production
Gina Figueira was born in and grew up in Windhoek, Namibia with her roots very much in the art community. Gina received an honours degree in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the university currently known as Rhodes (UCKAR) in 2015. After graduating, Gina worked in the marketing and collections departments of the National Art Gallery of Namibia. In 2017, Gina co-founded StArt Art Gallery with Helen Harris, curating exhibitions for the public and private sector and creating an online gallery and sales platform for Namibian artists. Having received a Chevening Award in 2019, Gina is currently completing her Masters in Art Gallery and Museum Studies at the University of Leeds. Her Masters Dissertation takes the German colonial Reiterdenkmal statue as its focal point, looking at responses to its removal in 2009 and 2014 and subsequently the privately funded replica made in Swakopmund in 2019.
