Albert Gouaffo is a professor of German literature and culture, as well as intercultural communication. He has been head of the Department for Applied Foreign Languages at the University of Dschang in Cameroon since 2015. He was elected vice president of the Association for German Studies in the African Sub-Sahara (GAS) in December 2018. He studied German and francophone African literature at the University of Yaoundé (Cameroon), Hanover and Saarbrücken. In 1997 he wrote his doctoral thesis, which bore the title “Fremdheitserfahrung und literarischer Rezeptionsprozess. Zur Rezeption der frankophonen afrikanischen Literatur im deutschen Sprach- und Kulturraum 1949–1990”. He became a professor in 2006 at the University of Saarland, with a professorial dissertation on “Wissens‑ und Kulturtransfer im kolonialen Kontext. Das Beispiel Kamerun – Deutschland”. His current research interests are postcolonial studies, German-African migration literature, memorial topography and colonial history. His most recent publication (co-authored by Stefanie Michels) is entitled Koloniale Verbindungen – transkulturelle Erinnerungstopografien: Das Rheinland in Deutschland und das Grasland Kameruns, Transcript‑Verlag, Bielefeld, 2019.
