Karin Guggeis is a German ethnologist, curator and author, as well as a promoter of art and culture. She studied ethnology, cultural anthropology and social psychology in Munich. She wrote her master’s thesis on the image of Africa and Africans in geography textbooks used in Bavarian schools today. She has been working at the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich since 1994. From 2009 to 2011, she was assistant director of the taskforce for museums at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde e.V. (German Anthropological Association). Her dissertation will soon be published at the University of Bayreuth under the title Star oder Loser? Zum Making of der Karrieren von Objekten in einem ethnologischen Museum. She has been leading the provenance research project for Max von Stetten’s colonial era collection from Cameroon, which is housed in the Museum Fünf Kontinente, since 2019.
