Mechthild Leutner is a German sinologist and historian. From 1991 to 2014 she held the university professorship for State and Society as well as Culture of Modern China at Freie Universität Berlin and was the German director of the Confucius Institute there from 2006 to 2019. In 2002 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Russian Academy of Sciences and visiting professorships on an honorary basis, including Peking University and Nanking University. Her research focuses on German-Chinese relations, China-related gender, social and ideological history, and the history of sinology.
