Prof. Dr. Barbara Plankensteiner has been Director of the Museum am Rothenbaum World Cultures and Arts (MARKK) in Hamburg since 2017. Under her direction, the museum embarked upon a radical reorientation process. Before that, she was Senior Curator for African Art for the Frances and Benjamin Benenson Foundation at the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, as well as curator of the African collection, Head Curator and Assistant Director of the Weltmuseum Museum of Ethnology in Vienna for many years. The cultural and social anthropologist created high-profile international exhibition projects in her capacity as curator, and published numerous works in the field of African art and material culture, museum anthropology, as well as specialist and collection-related history.
