Winani Thebele is the Chief Curator and Head of the Ethnology Division at the Botswana National Museum, where she has worked since 1993. She has a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and her thesis explores various options in dealing with cultural property translocated from Africa to European Museums in colonial contexts, such as repatriation or looking at the objects as shared heritage that need to be discussed from a perspective of universality. She has also been working in the History Department of the University of Botswana since 2017. She is a member of several international organizations such as ICOM, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Return of Cultural Property, The Commonwealth Association of Museums and the American Alliance of Museums.
