Heritage Deferred?

New Old Properties: How it started

The idea for New Old Properties developed from the international conference “Heritage Deferred?" in Berlin (22 - 23 November 2018). The need arose to further explore the key issues around the themes of restitution and commons by returning to their notions of property and ownership. And at the same time to expand and update the focus on at present highly debated questions of property such as infrastructure, land ownership and intellectual property from a perspective as global and non-western as possible.

Statement

Okwui Enwezor (born 23 October 1963 in Calabar, Nigeria; died 15 March 2019 in Munich), a Nigerian curator, author, university teacher and most recently director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich (2011-2018) could not personally participate in the symposium “Heritage Deferred?" in Berlin due to illness. In his Munich apartment, he recorded a video statement for the symposium, which formed part of his ongoing correspondence with the colleagues at Goethe-Institut.
