PLATO Ostrava

Janáčkova 22
Ostrava – Vítkovice

The installation serves as a stage for discussion and educational events. At the same time, bauhausTWINS becomes the central point of the festival re:bauhaus, which is organized in the 100th anniversary year of Bauhaus.

The project is shown as a room-in-room installation at PLATO, a former Bauhaus hardware store temporary used by the gallery, after its successful preview at the Baukultur Convention in Potsdam in 2018. On this extraordinary site, which plays ironically and contemporary with the heritage of the Bauhaus, bauhausTWINS embodies a haptic medium that relates the historical origin, the change over time and the today’s interaction.

bauhausTWINS is a walk-in installation with reused façade elements from the Atelierhaus façade of the Bauhaus Dessau, which originated from its great post-war renovation in 1976. The window and door elements were dismantled on the occasion of a further renovation and reconstruction of the Atelierhaus façade in 2011 and assigned to zukunftsgeraeusche by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
The construction is open to all sides and creates a different spatial impression and access from every direction: from the scale of the studio rooms of the Atelierhaus to an open, dissolving structure that opens up an extended context. bauhausTWINS addresses today's perception in dealing with the heritage of modernism, sustainable development and rebuilding and reassembling our cities and buildings.

The title bauhausTWINS plays with the English term twinning. Which is not only associated for the process of reuse in a new context. It emphasises the special phenomenon of the simultaneous existence of two versions of the façade elements: the reconstructions of 1976 and of 2011. But it also means partnership and appropriately stands for the coupling in steel constructions.
