What if solitude wasn’t silence but a different kind of listening? Step into a space where stillness speaks, and discover what emerges when you’re truly alone – with yourself.

This project features works that open pathways to new states of mind, inviting thoughtful introspection and encouraging playful discovery. Solitude is often misunderstood–mistaken for absence, isolation, or emptiness. But what if we reimagined it as something else entirely? As a space of presence, clarity or quiet joy?

Solitude – Silence, Self-Care and Creativity at the Goethe-Institut Tokyo invites audiences to explore the positive dimensions of solitude through a series of immersive artistic experiences. Featuring contemporary works that open pathways to introspection, altered states of mind, and playful discovery, the project is a gentle yet powerful invitation: to pause, reflect, and reconnect–with yourself.

At the heart of the program is Shikantanza (只管打坐), often translated as “just sitting” or “silent illumination,” a core concept of the Sōtō school of Zen Buddhism. In this context, solitude and silence are more than just forms of withdrawal. As one of East Asia’s most influential modes of perception, Zen offers a powerful lens for understanding how contemporary artists engage with solitude–through sound, light, and movement.

A series of performances is scheduled to take place in the Goethe-Institut Tokyo Hall, accompanied by a curated selection of installations throughout the former classrooms and common areas of the Goethe-Institut Tokyo. This initiative transforms the institute’s spaces into immersive environments, fostering dialogue between architecture, artistic expression, and audience experience.
