“In this age, what is local, what is traditional anymore? We borrow each other’s culture. The city is a product of migration; it’s a result of people migrating from other cities, from other states, from other countries.”
Another Universe started as a bedroom project by Uzair Sawal back in 2010, when he first discovered music software. Initially inspired by ambient artists and sample-based hip-hop producers, he eventually branched out to non-conventional songwriting and sound design. Currently, the project consists of rotating musicians with varying styles led by Uzair Sawal and multi-instrumentalist Kent Lee.
We want to show the parts of Kuala Lumpur that are often taken for granted and sidelined when it comes to promoting the city. In this particular case, we featured scenes from downtown Kuala Lumpur, especially Petaling Street or Chinatown, as the area was conveniently named for the sake of tourism. What most people don’t realise is that downtown Kuala Lumpur is where it all started and that it is still an important place for trade. It is one of the areas with the highest density of migrant workers in the country – just like how the city started, with people from other places looking for better lives.
