Magic Hour Dinner
A Culinary Dialogue
In November 2018, the Hamburg-based chefs “Werteköche – Chefs with Values” embark on a culinary tour to Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
You think, German food is all about boring potatoes and oily sausages? Not at all! While Bavarian pretzels and beer have become an international staple, Germany has much more to offer: a rich heritage and great variety of regional foods. The award-winning team of Werteköche has made it their task to proof to their guests that contemporary German cuisine is much more than even German locals expect. With an eye for regional ingredients, authentic cooking processes and contemporary interpretation of traditional recipes, the Werteköche are always up for experimenting with traditional twists and new tastes.
During their tour to 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Helge Hagemann, Mirko Trenkner and Steffen Burkhardt will collaborate with local chefs, who are equally eager to preserve local culinary heritage, invent contemporary recipes drawing inspiration from old knowledge and creating special moments of encounter for their guests with the rich culinary culture of their countries.
In Indonesia, acclaimed self-taught chef and food writer Petty Elliott joins Werteköche’s Helge Hagemann in the adventure to learn from each other, discover Germany’s and Indonesia’s rich food cultures, and engage in an intensive dialogue about dishes, recipes, ingredients and methods of preparation. Together they develop an unforgettable dining experience merging Indonesian and German culinary traditions.
In an exclusive dinner event, Goethe-Institut’s beautiful heritage-listed building in the heart of Jakarta turns into a temporary restaurant hosting the Magic Hour Dinner created by Petty and Helge, creating a unique cross-cultural dialogue that is both tangible and fragrant, sensual and edible.
