Goðafoss waterfall in northern Iceland. The source of this river is Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in the world outside the polar zones. Its ice covers more than 8,000 sq. km., with a thickness of up to 800 m. Global warming is causing the glacier to shrink at the rate of around a metre a year. If this continues, the meltwater will have a devastating effect on sea levels and ocean currents around the world. Photo: Charlotte Collins
