AGNES HELLER
Agnes Heller is a Hungarian philosopher. Her experience as a persecuted Jew made her a convinced Zionist, Marxist and Communist after 1945. She studied philosophy at the University of Budapest where she earned her PhD in 1955 under the supervision of Georg Lukács and later became his assistant. After years of political suppression in Hungary, Heller in 1977 emigrated to Australia, where she was a professor of sociology at La Trobe University in Melbourne from 1978 until 1983. In 1984 she was appointed Hannah Arendt Professor of Philosophy and Political Science at the New School for Social Research in New York. In October 2015, she was awarded the International Willy Brandt Prize for her engagement for mutual understanding and peace.
