1948 - 1952   studies Graphic Arts and Sculpture at the Dusseldorf Academy  
1953 - 1956   studies with sculptor Karl Hartung at the Academy of Fine Arts, Berlin
1956 - 1957    first exhibition in Stuttgart and Berlin; makes his debut as poet and playwright
1960 Literature Award of the German Critics’ Association
1962   French Literature Award "Le meilleur livre étranger" for "The Tin Drum" 
1965   Georg-Büchner Prize; Honorary Doctorate, Kenyon College, USA
1968 Fontane Prize; Carl-von-Ossietzky Medal
1976 Honorary Doctorate, Harvard University  
1978   Premio Letterario Viareggio, Italy  
1983 - 1986   President, Berliner Akademie der Künste (Berlin Academy of Arts)
1985   gifted the "Alfred-Döblin-Haus" in Wewelsfleth to the city of Berlin. The house is used by young authors.
