since 1919 starts a traineeship as bookseller: studies Theatre, Literature and Philosophy in Greifswald, Hamburg, Berlin and Würzburg
1926 - 1927 dramaturge and assistant director, State Theatre Würzburg
1931 - 1933  literary editor at the Berlin "Börsencourier"
1934  publishes his first novel "A Sad Affair"; goes into exile, Netherlands
1938 - 1945 returns to Berlin, where he writes film scripts for UFA; moves to Munich
1951 - 1954 publishes the post-war trilogy "Pigeons on the Grass", "The Hothouse", "Death in Rome"
1962 receives the Georg Büchner Award
since 1976 member of the German PEN
1986 "Collected Works", 6 vols. edited by Marcel Reich-Ranicki
1990 Honorary Doctorate, University Greifswald
1994

Honorary Citizen of his hometown Greifswald
