1782-1794 studies law, theology and languages in Halle, Göttingen and Erlangen; friendship with W.H. Wackenroder
1794–1799 returns to Berlin; works with Friedrich Nicolai; publishes novels and plays - "The Story of Mr. William Lovell", "The Seven Wife’s of Bluebeard", "Volksmärchen"
1799– 1817 joins the Romantic Circle in Jena; translates Shakespeare and Cervantes; adviser to the Shakespeare translations of August von Schlegel; travels to Italy and England; publishes "Phantasus"
1819– 1842  moves to Dresden; dramaturge at the Dresden Court Theatre; publication of 40 short novels and the "Dramaturgische Blätter"
1842  moves to Berlin; dramatic advisor at the Prussian Court; dominant figure of Berlin’s literary society
