Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781) was a highly intelligent poet, editor and reviewer. He had many different interests, a variety of jobs and moved a lot between cities such as Leipzig, Berlin and Hamburg. His work, consisting of poetry, drama and theoretical essays, shows that he was very open-minded and tolerant, especially when it came to religious belief. Lessing belongs to the most important authors of his time and his plays are still widely performed on stage.
