  • 20.12.1961 Official inauguration of Goethe-Institut Bangladesh in Dhaka, Gladstone House, 80 Motijheel Commercial Area, first director; Dr.Hans Stieber
  • 1964 Dr. Grobe takes over as director of Goethe-Institut Bangladesh
  • 1967 Relocation into new premises in Dhanmondi (House No. 23, Road No. 02, Dhanmondi); new director of the institute: Dr. Moeller
  • 1971 Temporary close-down of the institute and it´s branch office in Chittagong due to the independence war that led to the foundation of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh
  • 1973 Reopening of the institute under the direction of Walter Schweppe
  • 1974 Inauguration of the “Institute of Modern Languages” at the University of Dhaka
  • 1976 Mr. Schulz becomes the new director of the institute
  • 1976 - 1983 The institute is changed into a liaison office run under local direction (by Mr. Mohammed Sheikh) due to the difficult political situation in Bangladesh
  • 1983 Reopening as a main institute under the direction of Peter Sewitz
  • 1986 Renovation of the institutes´ premises; flying visit of the former president of the Federal Republic of Germany Richard von Weizsäcker on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Goethe-Institut Bangladesh; in the same year visit of Nobel prize winner Günter Grass
  • 1987 Exhibit of the works by the withdrawn and ascetic artist S.M Sultan
  • 1988 Premiere of Bertolt Brecht’s drama Galileo Galilei  by Nagorik (regulary staged until 1993)
  • 1991 Concert by chamber orchestra Concerto Köln in Dhaka which presented to more than 750 people
  • 1989 Hannelore Lechner becomes new director of the institute; in co-operation with German film director Christoph Hübner a one-hour-long documentary about life in a fisher´s village is produced
  • 1995 Relocation into its current premises (House No.10, Road No.9, Dhanmondi)
  • 1995 Barbara Meyer-Marroth takes over the direction of the institute
  • 2000 Dr. Markus Litz becomes new director; in co-operation with DRIK and other cultural partners the first Chobi Mela which is nowadays the biggest and most renowned photography festival in South Asia is organized for the first time. It now takes place bi-yearly.
  • 2005 Based on a three-week long workshop that took place at the Institute the Centre for Asian Theatre stages Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka for the first time;Torsten Oertel takes over from Dr. Markus Litz
  • 2009 Angela Grünert becomes the new director of the institute; the Rainbow-Festival is initiated
  • 2011 Judith Mirschberger takes over from Angela Grünert; 50th anniversary of Goethe-Institut Bangladesh
