Exhibition, game design and lecture

Games of the South is a project consisting of various stages. In the context of the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, it was developed by the Goethe-Institut and by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ, in the German acronym). The goal of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is the integration of all the continents and countries in a peaceful meeting in spite of their focus being, in most cases, competition and high performance sport. The project Games of the South approachs the notion of the value of sport from beyond its competitive nature.

Artists from Brazil, from other South American countries and from Germany seek vestiges and produce art works that reflect the tradition of sport in Latin America. .
The first stage of the project as a whole, the Games of the South artistic project, proposes a moment of pause and reflection amidst the avalanche of media usually typical of large sporting events. Plastic arts from Brazil, from other South American countries and from Germany seek vestiges and produce art works that reflect the tradition of sport in Latin America. The central point of departure for the research on the project was the Indigenous Games, that took place between 10/23 and 1/11 in 2015, in Palmas (Tocantins). More than two thousand athletes from 30 countries participated in competitions in traditional, not Olympic, sports and games. Meanwhile, ten artists present during the Games carrying out research.

The results are experimental in nature: findings ranging from short films to videos, drawings, sketches, performances, essays and photographs, which will all come together in a multimedia installation. The debate about this alternative sports scene raises awareness, encouraging, along with the artists’ positions, the critical questioning regarding the values and highlights of mega sporting events.

In three different formats – exhibition, game design (analog and digital) and a lecture – during the Games of the South discussions focuses on themes such as the commercialization of sports, environmental damage caused by mega-events and global efficiency.
