Conferences dealing with Oral Literature & Storytelling

This section deals with initiatives which study, gather and make available orally transmitted literary texts as well as projects focusing on the artistic expression of all forms of oral literature, including storytelling, spoken word, music, dance and theatre.

    Decolonization through Tradition - 9th Annual Indigenous and American Studies Storytellers Conference - Buffalo / USA   english

    The conference of the American storytellers took place on 12 and 13 April 2013 and highlighted the relationship between American native inhabitants and the European settlers in the field of storytelling.

    Erzähl mir was – Erzählfestival, Bergisches Land   deutsch

    Since 1997, Remscheid and the surrounding areas, have hosted a festival entitled “Erzähl mir was” (Tell me something). At the festival storytellers, from various cultures, backgrounds and age groups, have an opportunity to present their story to festival goers. This website also contains a few video samples.

    Festival der Erzählkunst - Hannover   deutsch

    The 16th Festival der Erzählkust (Festival of the art of storytelling) takes place from 27.09. until 06.10.2013 in Hannover. This event, amongst others, comprises of a Storytelling café, a fairy tale musical and the “Kulturgeschichte des Hörens” (“Cultural history of hearing”).

    ISOLA Conference 2012: “Orality, New Media, and the Postcolonial Experience”   english

    The 9th conference of the International Society for the Oral Literature of Africa (ISOLA) was held in June 2012 at the University of Venda in South Africa. The main focus was on the topic of “oral culture and new media”, particularly in view of the political and social changes in post-colonial Africa.

    The Saxon Fairy Tale Festival took place from 1-9 July 2013 in various towns in Saxony. The theme was „200 years of Grimm brothers’ fairy tales”. The festival’s activities included storytelling, dancing, and acting.

    The conference (25-27 September 2013) organised by the Tshwane University of Technology Faculty of the Arts concerns itself with the relationship between indigenous knowledge systems and the arts, or rather, the creative industry.

    Zwischen-Zeiten – Internationales Erzählfestival, Aachen   deutsch

    Since 1997 Aachen and the surrounding areas, have hosted an Erzählfestival (Storytelling festival). This event attracts storytellers and musicians from around the world who spend four days and nights performing within the framework of a predetermined theme.
