Rostock

The biggest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rostock has nearly 200,000 inhabitants and is situated on the Baltic Sea. Rostock's nearly 800-year history was decisively shaped by its rise as a flourishing member of the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages.

This history is very much in evidence in the many examples of medieval architecture such as the Kuhtor (one of the four city gates still preserved), St. Peter's Church, the Old Market and the Krahnstöverhaus. Nevertheless, Rostock is a young city. While it has retained much of its original charm, it has always been open to novelty and change. The students in Rostock have made sure of this. The university here, founded in 1419, is the oldest such institution in the Baltic region.
With "Hanse Sail", an annual event in August, Rostock presents a maritime folk festival in which some 200 traditional sailing ships and museum vessels from more than 10 different countries weigh anchor.
