What it seeks to solve

One of the cleanest cities in the world, one of the safest cities, one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa: Kigali. However, as in other growing cities, it's hard to socialize among the citizens. Locals and the larger number of expats barely connect and build a sense of community.

That is why Team Kigali created “ILAGIK”: To build a playful experience which is wrapped around the concept of creating an outgoing community using public spaces as a platform. As this game aims at exploring the city, it also is a recruitment for activists. After playing the game, players have the chance of becoming a part of the game designers to build an even bigger community that stands for freedom and connectivity between people by using public spaces as a platform for open communication.

ILAGIK: Story and Locations

"ILAGIK - The Search of Ruganzu" is a game of places. The locations mostly explore those public spaces that are well kept by the city but are inaccessible for the public. Criteria like popularity, accessibility, uniqueness and potential accessibility in the future influenced the process of selecting the locations of the game. Furthermore, the game weaves the locations’ real-world characteristics together with the story’s extended metaphor.

In a futuristic time when all the kingdoms of the world are polluted, the ozone layer breaks and the sun harms people, a very special kingdom called ILAGIK is protected by a glass dome. This dome becomes a powerful shield at the request of the king, who has control over a royal magnetic core. Here, it is still possible to play outdoors or enjoy the view of a landscape. When Kigwe and his army pose a threat to the kingdom, the king orders the shield to be destroyed and the single pieces hidden throughout the country, and his recently-born son Ruganzu is taken into exile. Kigwe can still take power, the king is murdered, but Kigwe can't find the individual fragments of the shield. Igalik sinks into chaos and decay under Kigwe's years of rule, while he is in constant search for the fragments in order to secure his tyranny.

Now, at the age of 18, the young Prince Ruganzu returns from exile to save Igalik. As a player, you are taken into Ruganzu's courage, but also thirst of vengeance. To destroy Kigwe's tyranny, you must collect all eight parts of the broken shield that was used to protect Ilagik before Kigwe finds them. Finally, you also have to get the two-tip spear from Kigwe that identifies who rules ILAGIK.

Why should I play ILAGIK?

Because the pieces are scattered all around Kigali, the player is taken on a journey across the city spying, hiding, running, solving puzzles to find the pieces and re-construct the shield. Do you want to tour through Kigali, want to dive into Rwanda's culture and rich history? Do you want to discover and relax at beautiful public spaces of Kigali in or from the far? And most importantly, do you want to be granted the title activist and join the game creators to go on more journeys? Then start playing the first location-based game in Rwanda. "ILAGIK - The Legend Of Ruganzu" is the first ever play solution we have in Ruanda.
