About the project

This year, 2021, marks the tenth anniversary of the videotaped confessions by the German neo-Nazi terrorist group NSU as well as the massacre on the Norwegian island of Utøya. This string of right-wing extremist murders has continued ever since, and investigative research gives us a rough idea of how vast and far-reaching these tentacular networks are. Against the backdrop of ongoing right-wing violence and terror in countries all over Europe, the Goethe-Instituts in Brussels, Budapest, Milan and Oslo have joined forces with various partner organizations to launch "Uncivil Society", a project to address the Europe-wide scourge of right-wing terror, asking:

What are the causes of right-wing violence? What methods and practices do Europe’s right-wing scenes employ? What artistic and civil society strategies have been developed to expose and counteract them?

It’s important for us not to focus only on the perpetrators, but to give victims of right-wing violence a hearing too. How can we strengthen groups that are actual or potential targets of right-wing violence? How can we discuss these acts of violence in a way that will make a difference?

Artistic projects and discussions will be held in participating countries all year long and brought together in Brussels, the European capital, at the end of the year. We’ll be working with European civil society to find pan-European answers to issues often treated within the confines of national contexts.
