Nach mehreren Monaten des Umbaus ist die Bibliothek des Goethe-Instituts in Sofia wiedereröffnet. Sie hat ein neues Aussehen und eine neue Funktion erhalten – mit mehr Platz für Veranstaltungen, Besucher*innen und Literaturfreund*innen und einem Design das mobil, schlicht und modern gleichzeitig ist. Mit dem Umbau beauftragt wurde das bulgarische Architektenbüro Cachè Atelier.

After several months of refurbishment Goethe-Institut’s library is open again. Thanks to the architects from Cachè Atelier it now has a brand new interior and functions: it has more space to host events, visitors and lovers of literature and a design that is mobile, simple and modern at the same time.

Diversity and social sustainability

The idea behind the refurbishment was to make our library a library for everyone and as barrier-free as possible. Encounter and exchange are central to the concept of the new library. This applies also to events in cooperation with our partners.

An inclusive guidance system with contrasting colors and pictograms for dyslexics was developed. Guide dogs are welcome. We are a place of values, and inclusion and diversity are an expression of Germany’s cosmopolitan and enlightened image. Inclusion means for us to think for the others and is an attitude towards people with cognitive and/or physical disabilities.
Virtual tour

As with our Luft studio, the call to host events in the library is open to partners of Goethe-Institut Bulgaria from the independent cultural sector and civil society at large. We will consider the applications on the basis of the event’s content, which has to share Goethe Institut’s values and fit into our areas of thematic focus. Applicants with limited financial resources will be prioritized. Events must be free and open to the public.

Dear friends and partners,

Send us a booking request through our online form. We will get back to you with a response within the next five working days. A single applicant can book the library for up to five events a year. In view of planning, we ask that you apply at least 20 days prior to the event.

Goethe-Institut reserves the right to turn down applications, if the activities do not correspond to our values, the application is incomplete, or the library is already booked on the requested date.

Virtual tour through the library

The library has a touchscreen, Playstation, iMac, WiFi, flip charts, pin boards, magnet wall, virtual reality headsets HTC-Vive, a gaming computer, 10 iPads, as well as chairs for up to 80 people. The library is also accessible from a ramp in the backyard.

The total area of the library is 160 sq. m.
