A Reading Workshop for Parents

Children are sponges! Reading to your child at an early age can help boost their brain development. It also helps to create a great bonding between parents and children. But what makes a good story teller? And how to pick the right books to read to your children?

On 19th December, Olivia Yong, a mother of two and an experienced storyteller will host a workshop at the library of Goethe-Institut Hongkong exclusively for parents. Olivia will share with all participants the skill to guide children to learn values such as Sharing, Empathy and Gratitude through picture books. She will also give us tips on how to choose meaningful picture books for children.

Olivia Yong (楊瑾)

Mother of two. Olivia was the chief editor and co-creator of “Beanie Children’s Life Magazine” in her early years. Then, she worked in the Oxfam Development Education Group and engaged in global citizenship education for nearly ten years.

Today, story-telling has become an important part of Olivia’s life. In 2018, Olivia penned the
book on food justice, “Wind Blowing Across the Cornfields”, (《風吹過,粟米田》)hoping to take every child to ride the wind and wander around the world. After that, she started an ongoing collaboration with Rolling Books -- a social enterprise that promotes reading -- to organize reading campaigns in public spaces such as farms, beaches, playground, housing estates etc..for people of all ages.

Olivia believes “a good story is telling about an entire world”. If we can all walk into and
empathize with each other’s stories, the world will be a better place.
