Since 2012, the Goethe-Institut, within the framework of the “Transformation Partnership”, has been strengthening and promoting civil society processes in North Africa and Middle East (MENA) through cultural and educational projects. After more than 150 projects implemented together with more than 200 local and international partners in 11 project countries and more than 30,000 participants, the Ta’ziz Partnership, as the project has been called since 2021, is celebrating 2022 its 10th anniversary under the motto ʿalā aṭ-Ṭarīq, which means “on the way”. The project activities are far from being at an end, but on the way to a future full of opportunities for dialogue, change, civil society development, and new cultural and educational projects that pave this way.

On the occasion of the anniversary, however, we will not only look forward, but also look back at ten years of project work. Ten projects and their faces will be presented in detail on the following pages. Project articles provide insights into the activism and commitment of the past years, capture the voices of participants and organizers, and report from the project countries. In the portrait videos, project managers, participants, initiators and cultural workers talk about their work, their participation in the Ta’ziz partnership and their motivation to actively shape and change society.
