METHODOLOGY - DIDACTICS - DIGITAL - AN IN-SERVICE TRAINING SERIES FOR SCHOOLTEACHERS

In order to support the reform efforts of the Egyptian Ministry of Education, the project "Methodology - Didactics - Digital" is creating an online training course for schoolteachers and training multipliers, who will conduct the training course. The participating teachers will be taught methodological tools in order to promote creativity and inventiveness among pupils. The aim of the project is to strengthen a competence-oriented education system as well as to further qualify teachers for modern teaching methods.

The Egyptian school system is in urgent need of reform. A rapidly increasing number of pupils - from about 20 million in the school year of 2015/16 to about 23.5 million within 4 years - are encountering a school system which has suffered from decades of underfunding and which possesses neither the necessary infrastructure nor enough teachers. In addition to excessive class sizes and insufficient salaries, the quality of teaching is also influenced by inadequate teacher training and further education, outdated forms of teaching and purely frontal teaching.

The Egyptian Ministry of Education launched the "Education 2.0" reform process in 2018. Teaching and examination methods were to be fundamentally changed with the inclusion of digital media in the teaching and learning process. This has created a great need for staff with the necessary expertise in digital education, along with modern teaching methods to train teachers in these areas.

The Goethe-Institut Cairo is responding to this need by creating an online training series on interdisciplinary modern teaching methods and digital literacy for teachers. This is to be integrated into the portfolio of the Egyptian state teacher training system of the Ministry of Education and offered by it on a regular basis from the year 2023 onwards. For this purpose, in 2022 the Goethe-Institut will conduct a detailed training course on the contents of the training series with a group of around 25 trainers from the Ministry of Education in order to enable them to conduct the training course independently in the future. In this way, the quality and sustainability of the in-service training series will be ensured and the project "Methodology - Didactics - Digital – an In-service training series for schoolteachers" will contribute to the modernisation and professionalisation of the school and in-service training system.
