The Internationale Deutscholympiade is a biannual worldwide contest in which contestants can put their German language skills to the test at three different levels (A2, B1 and B2). The finals are held in a different Goethe-Institut location in Germany every two years.
The finalists are determined in advance in each participating country’s national contest: the winners of the qualifying rounds then represent their country in the finals, where they compete against the world's best German learners. The competition is not only about language skills, however, it’s also about intercultural skills and international teamwork.
With that in mind, the Goethe-Institut London is looking for two students to represent the UK at the world finals of the IDO 2022 in Hamburg. They will show their German language and culture skills in a competition with students from 75 countries.
Participants must be at least 14 years old and no more than 17 years old during the IDO (25th July- 5th August, 2022). I.e. they must have been born between 06.08.2004 and 24.07.2008.
Application form
Excluded from participation are:
- Students whose mother tongue is German or who have at least one parent/guardian who is German-speaking
- Students who have lived in German-speaking countries for more than six months.
- Students from German schools abroad and local private schools whose language of instruction and communication is predominantly German (e.g. German immersion schools)
- Students who are outside the targeted age group
- Students who have already started their studies at the university.
Attention: Incorrect information about the participants will lead to disqualification or to the revocation of winning places.
At the National Preliminary round in the UK, the top four finishers will win some Goethe goodies.
The top two UK Olympians and one accompanying teacher will receive a scholarship to travel to Hamburg in the summer of 2022, including airfare, accommodation, meals and cultural programme. The winners of the International German Olympics will receive a scholarship to undertake a youth course in Germany in the summer of 2023.
In 2020, Sophia, a student from London, and Hannah, student from Essex, participated in the virtual IDO finals for the UK. Sophia was part of the group that won the 'Beste Gruppenleistung' prize!
