IDO 2022

The Internationale Deutscholympiade (IDO), the world’s biggest German language contest, is picking up speed again! In 2022, the final will take place in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg from 25 July to 5 August 2022.

What is the IDO?

The Internationale Deutscholympiade is a biannual worldwide contest where contestants put their German language skills to the test at three different levels (A2, B1 and B2). The finals are held in a different Goethe-Institut location in Germany every two years.

Each participating country hosts national qualifying rounds to determine the top two 'Olympians' who will represent their country at the IDO finals during the summer holidays, where they compete against the world's best German learners. The competition is not only about language skills, however, it’s also about intercultural skills and international teamwork.

The top two UK Olympians and one accompanying teacher will receive a scholarship to travel to the IDO finals in Germany, including airfare, accommodation, meals and cultural programme. The winners of the International German Olympics will receive a  scholarship to undertake a youth course in Germany the following summer.

The IDO takes place every two years - the next IDO will be in 2023-2024.

IDO 2022 - Meet our UK finalists!

We are delighted to introduce you to our IDO 2022 finalists, Martha Machray (Brentwood School) and Chinedu Ndukwu (St. Olave's Grammar School).

Our heartfelt congratulations go to Martha and Chinedu who, together with one accompanying teacher, will receive a scholarship to travel to the IDO finals in Hamburg this summer 2022!

Martha and Chinedu wowed us with their impressive German skills and demonstrated great teamwork and creativity in the online national qualifying rounds in November 2021. We would also like to thank all of the other participants in the qualifying rounds who can be equally proud of their outstanding achievements.

In February 2022, we interviewed Martha and Chinedu to ask them what learning German means to them and what they're most looking forward to at the IDO Finals in Hamburg:
