Double Club is a program of the Arsenal football club in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut London to combine language lessons with football to encourage pupils to learn a language and continue with it until the end of school.
It aims to fuse football and education together to form a fun and enjoyable way for young people to engage with their academic studies and football at the same time.
The Arsenal Double Club started in 1998 with modules in literacy and numeracy and has now expanded to include most curriculum subjects. It is suited for primary students as well as secondary students from Year 7-9. The resources generally last for a term (roughly 8 sessions) and can be delivered either as an after-school club, or during curriculum time.
The session should take 90 min like a football game. In the first half pupils work through the resources in the classroom including colourful, Arsenal-themed workbooks, interactive whiteboard activities and a DVD featuring one of Arsenal’s players speaking in their native language. In the other half, pupils take part in a practical football/games session, delivered by an FA-qualified coach or PE teacher, using the target language to reinforce their learning.
All materials will be provided by the football club. Once a year pupils have the chance to participate in an Arsenal Language Day at the Emirates Stadium (including a guided stadium tour, museum visit, language activities, presentation ceremony, free T-shirts & footballs).
