The Goethe-Institut London is looking for an Accounting Assistant, with focus on bookkeeping and controlling, to start on 20.08.2019. Employment will be full-time with 39 hours per week. The starting salary in the Goethe-Institutes remuneration scheme is £ 30,990 p.a. Annual Leave starts with 26 days plus Bank Holidays. This increases depending on length of service. The Goethe-Institut also offers a contributory pension scheme.

Your duties comprise:

  • Financial accounting tasks, in particular payroll accounting and internal cost allocation, in SAP
  • Assisting with financial controlling for the Goethe-Institut London and the institutes in Northwestern Europe
  • Generating and preparing reports and statistical evaluation for the institutes in Northwestern Europe and assisting in their analysis
  • Dealing with questions arising from audit reports (internal & external audits e.g. German Federal Court of Auditors, German Federal Office of Administration, financial auditors)
  • Assisting with day-end, month-end and year-end closing
  • Assisting with budget planning for the Goethe-Institut London
  • Cash and bank transactions
  • Processing of travel expense claims based on German travel-cost legislation and internal directives of the institute
  • Cross-sectional tasks in the administration department
  • Contact person regarding bookkeeping questions for our departments and for external bookkeeping for our payroll
  • Assisting with the digitisation and automation of administrative processes


  • Relevant professional background with focus on financial accounting
  • Very good accounting skills
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Very good command of spoken and written English and German
  • Knowledge of SAP Accounting and Controlling modules desirable
  • Ideally knowledge of budget law (German public sector)
