Film screenings curated by Ethnofest Athens Ethnographic Film Festival

FILM CLUB

FILM CLUB is a series of film screenings developed as separate “episodes” curated by different Greek film festivals. In the context of this program, which will unfold periodically from July 2022 onwards, films from the Goethe-Institut’s Film Archive will be shown alongside films selected by the collaborators of FILM CLUB.

The third episode takes place on December 8 at 20:00 in the Goethe-Institut Athen Amphitheatre, and is curated by ETHNOFEST Athens Ethnographic Film Festival.

On the occasion of Werner Herzog’s 80th birthday, who was born on September 5, 1942, in Munich, his film Lektionen in Finsternis [Lessons of Darkness] will be shown. The screening of Sans soleil [Sunless] by Chris Marker will follow.

The FILM CLUB is an initiative of the Goethe-Institut Athen. Special thanks to Athina Rachel Tsangari.

PROGRAMME

Thursday, December 8, 2022

20:00
Lektionen in Finsternis [Lessons of Darkness], Werner Herzog, Germany, 1992, 52'
(in German with Greek and English subtitles)

Shortly before the end of the Second Gulf War, Iraqi troops set fire to oil fields as they retreated from Kuwait. Herzog and his cinematographer sought to capture the incomprehensible, the apocalypse, with cinematic means and to show what was left behind.

21:10
Sans soleil [Sunless], Chris Marker, France, 1983, 100'
(in French with Greek and English subtitles)

A thought in pictures about different countries, from Iceland to Guinea-Bissau, passing through Japan. Letters of a freelance cameraman, read by an unknown woman. Two countries have attracted his particular attention: modern Japan and Guinea-Bissau after its failed revolution.

A film from the IFcinéma digital film archive of the French Institute.

The event forms part of the “70 Years of the Goethe-Institut Athen” programme.
