Dear reader,

We are pleased to present a selection of activities of the Goethe-Institut Irak in our newsletter and hope you enjoy reading the November 2023 issue.

Residencial Circles

Music Residency

Iraqi musicians come together for a ten-day music residency during which they embark on a journey of artistic exchange. With the support of their mentors, they set out to create a stage programme combining their various styles. This not only promises to foster a fascinating dynamic but also to forge lasting partnerships among them. Their newly developed repertoire will be presented on 2 November in front of a Sulaymaniyah audience.

Orchestra Workshop

In this collaborative project with the Slemani Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Abdudallah Sagirma, musicians and composers Hans Rotman and Lorenzo Ghirlanda  spend a week preparing a joint concert. On 3 November at 5 PM, they will lead an audience at the Sulaymaniyah University conference hall on an exploration of various musical epochs.

Theatre Residency

The month of October saw our theatre residency participants from across Iraq spend ten intensive days working together on aspects of directing, acting, and stage setting. Mentored by the German and Polish theatre makers Matthias Gehrt, Gabriele Trinczek, and Jarek Siejkowski, they mounted Peter Handke’s play “The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other”.

German-French Cooperation

Baghdad and Erbil

Koral Mesopotamia

KORAL MESOPOTAMIA is an intercultural choir ensemble that brings together singers from different regions throughout Iraq. After months of collaboration, they will present a unique concert: a fusion of Arabic, Kurdish, Assyrian, Yezidi, Turkmen and Armenian songs --  for the first time in polyphonic arrangements. The ensemble is led by opera singer Faten Ahmed, with coaching by Bernhard Hofmann and Luna Silva. The concerts will take place November 9 in Erbil in Roshnbiri Hall and on November 11 in the Abbasid Palace.

KultKino / Ciné CLub

Don’t miss your opportunity to join this year’s last KultKino/Cinéclub events, brought to you by the Goethe-Institut Iraq and the Institut Français d’Irak à Erbil: On 2 November, we will be showing the tragic comedy “Nö” by director Dietrich Brüggemann, and on 16 November, the programme features “Ouistreham“ by Emmanual Carrère. All films in the KultKino/Cinéclub series are shown in their original language with English subtitles.

Jazz in/à Erbil

With three concerts, showcasing the brilliant versatility of Jazz music, “Jazz in Erbil”, organised by the Goethe-Institut Iraq and the Institut Français d’Irak à Erbil, entered its fifth year. The remarkable collaboration between musicians from Europe and the Kurdistan region demonstrated once more that music transcends boundaries.
