On January 20, Helan starts the year 2024 with a photo exhibition by the artist Halo Lano. The monochrome images depict the inner confusion and loneliness of the individual in the face of an overly complex and fast-moving present. The exhibition opens at 7 p.m. and can be visited daily from 5 p.m. Helan is a project of the Goethe-Institut Irak in cooperation with Sêv Gallery and the Framing School for Photojournalism 

On January 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Goethe-Institut Irak invites you to a German day in Erbil. Trial lessons, information on German exams, enrollments and other German-related activities promise a varied program.  
Everyone who is interested in Germany and learning German is invited. 

In February, a German course for Level A1 will start in Baghdad, as well as a course for level A1.1 in Erbil. Enrollments are possible in both cities, starting now. 

On January 18 from 6-7:30 p.m., thoughts will take wings, when the six to nine-year-old participants at Bulbul read stories and then implement them in an artistic activity. In the upcoming event in Erbil, the journey will take us to a city under water; the children will create a collage.  
The activity takes place in cooperation with Sêv Gallery. 

Promoting environmental awareness in Iraq through artistic activities is the main goal of the Guan Eden Project. Individuals and organizations that have already gained experience in the field of environmental protection can apply to take part in the 2024 campaign year until February 25th.  
Guan Eden is a Ta’ziz project funded by the Federal Foreign Office. 

The environmental carnivals in autumn and winter 2023 were the highlight of the Guan Eden campaign year. Together with local partners and participants in the Guan Eden workshops, programs specifically tailored to local needs and conditions were developed and implemented, which help to anchor greater environmental awareness among the population. In Baghdad, Mosul, Dohuk, Ranya, Sulaymaniyah and Rwanduz, visitors experienced performances, exhibitions, music, discussions and activities for children and families. By offering them in public spaces and combining environmental topics with an artistic approach, the topics are presented in a way that is easy to access and relatable, thus strengthening the awareness of environmental protection among the general population.

The activities within the Multaka project show how cultural heritage can be experienced. Together with specially trained trainers, children from public schools visit museums, such as the National Museum in Baghdad, or sites of cultural heritage, such as the archaeological area around Ashur. The children then deal with what they have experienced in an artistic way and thereby come closer to the history and past of their country on different levels. In 2023, the project reached a total of 350 children aged 9-12 from 8 schools. Multaka is a Ta’ziz project funded by the Federal Foreign Office. 

After three years of intensive collaboration between the Goethe-Institut Irak, the University of Sulaymaniyah and the University of the Arts in Bremen, the Design Academy project has developed into the “Design” course at the University of Sulaymaniyah. 
  
The professionalization of the creative industries is the focus of the project, which was implemented by the Goethe-Institut Irak and is part of the global creative industries project, financed by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). 

In the two-day lasting application training on December 16 and 17 in Erbil, participants from language level B1 learned more about CVs and letters of motivation together with trainer Miguel Rezzani and dealt with job portals and strategies during job interviews. 
  
The training took place as part of the “Living and Working in Germany” project, funded by the European Union. 
 

The Goethe-Institut Iraq was able to hold a total of seven residencies with different focuses in 2023. In the residencies, young cultural actors from Iraq from the fields of film, music, literature and theater come together to work on a topic during an intensive phase that usually lasts ten days. The residencies often take place together with European artists. 
  
The resulting products such as concerts, performances, productions or publications are just as much a focus as networking and the exchange of knowledge at eye level.
