“Talking Types“ meet up

We are thrilled to announce the launch of "Talking Types", a monthly gathering where type designers and enthusiasts come together to delve into all aspects of type design and typography. Burmese type designers, renowned for creating prominent Burmese fonts and regularly sharing their expertise in type design and typography via social media, will attend the meetup. These meetings will take place every second Saturday of the month.

The idea for Talking Types originated from a casual meeting with Burmese type designers and a German type designer, who shared a common interest in discussing type design and typography. Talking Types aims to create a supportive and dynamic community that fosters learning, collaboration, innovation, and professional growth within the field of typography and type design. Type design is the art and process of creating typefaces, which are sets of characters with a consistent appearance and style. Type designers are skilled professionals who specialize in crafting functional and aesthetically pleasing fonts.

Goethe-Institut Myanmar proudly hosts the first "Talking Types" meetup by providing the venue, Round Table, and facilities. We would also like to introduce "Round Table Discussion," which is open for people to sit in the literal setup of a Round Table to discuss a specific topic. Unlike a formal presentation or debate, everyone has an equal chance to speak and share their thoughts. It's a way for people to have a conversation, exchange ideas, and work together to find solutions or make decisions.

First "Talking Types" Meetup Details

Materials of life

We are delighted to share an update on the progress of our ongoing "Materials of Life" program at the Goethe-Institut Myanmar. Seven artists were selected from among the applicants to participate in our program.

Our program began on March 20th with a "Workshop on Natural Dyeing Techniques," led by artisans from KyaukpaDaung in the Mandalay Region. During this workshop, participants explored traditional pigment extraction methods and learned various art techniques, gaining a deeper insight into Myanmar's cultural heritage.

In the last week of March, our participants studied bamboo crafts in detail under the guidance of experts from Inle, Shane State.

Looking ahead to April, we have planned workshops on natural dyeing, Shan paper making, and chanting paper writing techniques. These workshops will provide our artists with more opportunities to explore and create, contributing to conserving Myanmar's cultural heritage.

We will continue to share new content and updates related to the program.

Free Digitization Training Program

For those keen on preserving and digitizing old photos, the Myanmar Photo Archive and Goethe-Institut Myanmar collaborated on a Free Digitization Training Program in March. Participants from various cities, including Saging, Mandalay, Pyin Oo Lwin, Mgway, and Yangon, enthusiastically participated in the training, which concluded successfully.

During the course, Lukas Birk, the founder of MPA, shared insights on renowned archives worldwide, open-access libraries like the Myanmar Photo Archive, copyright issues, the history of photo materials, and the classification of photo ages. The MPA team also guided the handling and preserving of old photos and techniques for digitization using scanners, cameras, smartphones, and methods for digitizing negative films. Since the course was conducted online to facilitate participation from across the country, we ensured that the lessons were presented in an easily understandable manner, supplemented with photos, materials, and demonstration videos.

To further expand and enhance the effectiveness of our training program, we extended it with an in-person workshop for digitization. Applicants from Yangon, along with some participants from the online course, joined us for the workshop held at the Goethe-Institut Myanmar on 30th March. During the workshop, the Myanmar Photo Archive team demonstrated digitization methods for both photos and negatives, and participants also had the opportunity to practice these techniques themselves.

"International Women's Day 2024"

The programs organized by Goethe-Institut Myanmar to commemorate International Women's Day have concluded successfully.

On March 8, 2024, a panel discussion titled 'Women Make Film' was conducted by DOSICINÈ and supported by Goethe-Institut Myanmar, drawing a significant audience.

Aligning with the global theme of 'Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,' Goethe-Institut Myanmar presented a community theater event on March 9, 2024. This involved collaboration with talented Thukuma Khayeethe theater artists from Myanmar, who received training from a gender expert to infuse gender perspectives into their creative narratives. The audience engaged in discussions exploring how societal norms influence inequality between genders.

Additionally, teachers from Goethe-Institut Myanmar performed a drama highlighting women's strength in overcoming challenges and striving for success, which received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
