World Oceans Day 2025

Open Call for Art
“Our Ocean, Our Life: Stories from Myanmar’s Coasts”
This World Oceans Day, Myanmar Ocean project and Goethe-Institut Myanmar invite young artists, writers and creatives across the country to reflect the deep and personal connections between people and the sea.

“Our Ocean, Our Life” is an open call for creative works that reflect the beauty and fragility of the ocean and the vital role it plays in the lives of Myanmar’s coastal communities. It is a space to share your worries, your hopes and your dreams - and to ask how we can care for the ocean that sustains us all.

“Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us”
The United Nations theme for World Oceans Day 2025 is “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us”. This theme invites us to reflect on the ocean’s majesty and the essential role it plays in sustaining life - from providing food and oxygen to supporting coastal communities and regulating the climate. It’s a call to protect what inspires and supports us all.

Goethe-Institut Myanmar to Participate in “Cultural Connections” Open House Series

Throughout the month of May, eight embassies and cultural institutions in Yangon — including those representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States — will jointly present Cultural Connections, a series of Open House events celebrating international culture and collaboration.

These events will offer the public a unique opportunity to engage with diverse cultural traditions through curated programs featuring culinary demonstrations, art and photography exhibitions, musical performances, language activities, and more.

Goethe-Institut Myanmar is pleased to take part in this initiative. Our Open House will be held on Saturday, 24 May. It will feature a full day of activities across our departments, such as Language, Library, and Information and Cultural Program, culminating in a sundowner-style music event in the evening.

We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating cultural exchange and shared creativity. Further details will be announced in due course.

Present Grounds: A Grant for Artistic and Cultural Expression (M/F/D)

We invite artists, cultural practitioners, creatives, and experts from across the artistic and cultural fields to apply for a production grant supporting new work, knowledge, and research closely connected with local communities in various areas of Myanmar.

This grant aims to foster creative responses to the evolving social and the shifting topographies of culture and community in Myanmar, particularly in light of the challenges communities continue to face in the aftermath of recent events.

Selected individuals or collectives will receive support to develop new presentations—ranging from research papers to creative projects in any format or medium.

We warmly welcome applications not only from established professionals but also from emerging talents across diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
