Martin Walser

(Born 24.03.1927 in Wasserburg; died 26.07.2023 in Überlingen). Author.

Martin Walser studied literature, history and philosophy in Regensburg and Tübingen. His first novel, Ehen in Philippsburg (Marriage in Philippsburg) was published in 1957 and brought him widespread success and the Hermann Hesse Prize. With the novella Ein fliehendes Pferd (1978) (Runaway Horse), Walser landed a bestseller. Honours for his work, which consists of novels, stories and plays, include the Georg Büchner Prize, awarded in 1981, and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1998. The criticism of what he called the "instrumentalisation" of Auschwitz in his acceptance speech there sparked a public controversy on the subject of anti-Semitism, as did his novel Tod eines Kritikers (Death of a Critic), published in 2002.
