The role of photography in the creation of narratives

Bárbara Monteiro is a photographer, videographer, and audio narrator based in Lisbon, whose practice ranges from commercial to documentary and authorial work. With a degree in Journalism, specializing in photojournalism, she perfected her practice at the Portuguese Institute of Photography's studio lighting workshop (2013) and Micmojo's portrait masterclass (2015). In 2023-24, she completed the NARRATIVA Masterclass (five months) led by documentary photographer Mário Cruz. Since 2014, her images have been published in cultural and independent media, alongside commercial work for BMW, Outsystems, Galp, Fidelidade, Lisnave, and various architecture and communication studios. In 2024, she joined the NARRATIVA association in Lisbon, where she writes and presents the bilingual NARRATIVA podcast, conducting in-depth conversations with photographers exhibiting in the space. Her long-term project THIS IS HEAVEN was selected for #GreifGuestRoom, a finalist for the ArtACCA Prize 2024 and the Sony World Photography Awards 2025 (Professional — Perspectives category), and was exhibited at the official Sony awards exhibition at Somerset House, London, in 2025.

Fátima Lopes Cardoso is the coordinator of the Bachelor's degree in Journalism at the School of Communication and Media Studies in Lisbon. Since 2006, she has taught several courses related to print journalism and visual languages, combining her academic work with a professional career as a journalist for various press outlets. She began her journalism career in 1997 at the now-defunct newspaper A Capital. She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at NOVA University Lisbon and is a full researcher at LIACOM. Fátima is also the author of several books, book chapters, and academic articles in the fields of media and journalism studies.

Reinaldo Rodrigues has been a Professional journalist since 1998, currently serving as photo editor at Diário de Notícias. Holds a Master's degree in Audiovisual and Multimedia, with a keen focus on changes and innovations in the media sector. Guest assistant lecturer at the School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS) and the School of Education in Coimbra (ESEC). Trainer at CENJOR in the fields of photography, photojournalism, and video journalism. Among various awards and recognitions, the 2021 Gazeta Award for Multimedia Journalism stands out.

Ana Sofia Paiva is a PhD candidate in Communication Sciences at NOVA FCSH, focusing on innovation in audio applied to radio and audio journalism. She is a researcher at the NOVA Institute of Communication (ICNOVA/NOVA FCSH) and at the Observatory of Innovation in Media (Obi.Media). Throughout her career, she has produced podcasts, created content using binaural sound, and completed an artistic residency at CCB as part of the "Sound It" initiative. She has collaborated with Gerador and Rádio Antecâmara, and interned at TSF and Rádio Clube da Covilhã. She also contributed to two science communication projects at NOVA FCSH: FCSH +Lisboa and N+ Ciência que se Explica.
