Gerhild Steinbuch

Gerhild Steinbuch © Clara Wildberger Gerhild Steinbuch, born 1983 in Mödling, studied Scenic Writing at DRAMA FORUM Graz and Master Dramaturgy at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin. Since 2019 she is a professor at the Institute for Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, since fall 2021 Head of the Institute. She writes texts for spoken and musical theater, radio plays, prose, essays, works as a freelance dramaturg as well as a translator from English (most recently: N̶o̶t̶ The End of the World by Chris Bush, directed by Katie Mitchell, premiered by Schaubühne Berlin, 2021, Beyond Caring by Alexander Zeldin, Schaubühne Berlin, 2022, Trojan Women, directed by Adena Jacobs, Burgtheater Vienna, 2022). Her texts are represented by Rowohlt Theater Verlag. Winner of the play competition of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz Berlin, in-house playwright at the Schauspielhaus Vienna, participation in the Bachmann Prize, in the International Residency at the Royal Court Theatre London, scholarship holder of the Autorenwerkstatt Prosa at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin, in the Autor*innenlabor at the Schauspiel Frankfurt, Hansmann-Poethen Scholarship, manuskripte Prize, most recently scholarship holder of the Berliner Ensemble 2021 / 2022. Jury activities for the BMKOES, the Literar Mechana and the Retzhofer Dramapreis. Gerhild Steinbuch is a founding member of HYDRA (formerly Nazis & Goldmund), a writers' initiative against the European right, as well as co-initiator of VIELEN in Austria. For Nazis & Goldmund she curated the event series Die Zukunft des Widerstands (The Future of Resistance) at brut Wien and Volksbühne Berlin (2018 - 2019), as well as the think tank Politik und Gefühl (2020) in cooperation with Literaturhaus Wien, Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln, Center for Literature Burg Hülshoff and Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien. As part of her work at the Institute for Language Arts, she has realized numerous collaborative projects, including with the Music and Private University of Vienna, the Wiener Festwochen (2021, 2022) and Wien Modern (2021).
