A fusion of experimental music and Vietnamese instruments: The sound artist, composer and turntablist Ignaz Schick spends 11 days in Vietnam with a cultural exchange scholarship by the Senate of Berlin that lets him work in Southeast Asia for a total of three months. In Hanoi and Saigon, he researches the respective experimental music scene and exchanges with local musicians. In addition to his research, Schick will give a three-day workshop for young musicians in Hanoi. The workshop deals with a self-developed composition language for improvisational musicians based on graphical elements and verbal instructions.
We would like to invite you to the final concert on 17.03.2017 at 8 pm in the Rec Room! First, we hear a score specially composed for the Vietnamese musicians, which Schick rehearsed with the music students during the workshop. Afterwards, Ignaz Schick performs with three professional musicians: with musician and composer Kim Ngoc, percussionist Son X as well as Đàn Bầu (Monochord) player Ngô Trà My. What is special about this is that the Vietnamese musicians play almost exclusively on Vietnamese instruments.
The free improvising musician, sound artist and composer Ignaz Schick got obsessed with many different instruments and sound making devices when he studied the saxophone. For several years, he worked as an assistant for contemporary composer Josef Anton Riedl. Since 1995, he lives and works in Berlin where he became an active and integral force of the so-called "Berlin Nouvelle Vague" and the blossoming "experimental" music scene. He has his own label “Zarek” and tours the world as a soloist as well as with many different ensembles.
