Sonic Library

Goethe-Institut South Africa Library takes on a sonic modality.

With the Sonic Library the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg Library reimagines the library as an experimental, participatory broadcast and performance space-one that honours the library’s role in archiving and knowledge sharing; while expanding its sonic and cultural possibilities. We recognize sound as an important historical record.

The Sonic Library concept is introduced through initiatives that focus on documenting, preserving, and activating the sounds that shaped/shape social, cultural, and political life in South Africa, Africa and beyond.

We reimagine the library as a space for knowledge preservation through oral traditions and explore the possibilities between traditional libraries and digital needs.

We aim to preserve cultural memory while encouraging artists, researchers, and communities to engage with sound as a tool for history, identity, and creative expression.
