The Con-struction Cartel
Exhibition runs until Monday 29 August
-
GoetheonMain, Johannesburg
The Con is a journalism and art collective, and an "anti-media media platform" based in Johannesburg and Harare. According to its founders, it was created to counteract the South African media’s unchecked and unacknowledged race, gender and class bias. The Con-struction Cartel asks “What is being destroyed when White Capital Builds?” It is a forensic and social investigation of white capital’s anti-competitive behaviour and how that has directly affected the lives of ordinary, poor black South Africans, as well as the country’s developmental agenda, as it moves away from the inequalities of apartheid. By looking at how construction companies in South Africa collude amongst themselves - a methodology which finds its roots during apartheid - The Con aims to examine those aspects of apartheid which retain a strong presence in South Africa.
