History of the comic scene in West Africa with a focus on Ghana

History is crucial in any discipline for defining what contemporary artists are and what they draw inspiration from. Traditionally, written stories have not been part of African culture because history revolves around stories of historical and fictional characters being told orally. During the colonial period, however, Westerners flooded West African countries with Western comics that told Western stories. In the decades of Africa's decolonization, a trend was observed to transpose Western comic characters into African contexts. African comic artists have come a long way since then and one can now come across talented artists writing African stories with African characters.
