The importance of representation in comic art

Discovering comics, rediscovering comics, the passionate love of producing comics, and understanding the lack of representation in comics describes the journey of the artist Kavula Bonolo. She shares her early years growing up in South Africa, being influenced by a society of white people and their comics to how she blossomed to becoming a comic artist with the aptitude to produce a character she can identify with as was lacking when she was younger. Inspired by Jackie Holmes, the first black female cartoonist in the US, she created her comic “Nana & Didi” as a critical response to the few existing representations of black women in South African Comics. A crucial step in amending the accurate portrayal of black women in South African comics, who require more and various representations.
