About the Speakers


Frédéric Martel is an academic, journalist and a New York Times bestseller author.As an academic, Martel is a tenured professor of creative economies at Zurich University for the Arts (ZHdK). He is also the main researcher at the Zurich Center for Creative Economies (ZCCE/ZHdK). Previous experiences include researcher fellow at the CERI, Center for International Studies, at Sciences Po-Paris, visiting scholar at Harvard and adviser to the European Commission as a member of “New Narrative for Europe”, the cultural task force of the former EU president . He is the author of eleven books, including On Culture in America (Gallimard, 2006), On the Global War on Culture and Medias (Flammarion, 2010 ; translated in 12 languages) and Smart, On the internets (Stock, 2014 ; translated in 10 languages).

Aurel von Richthofen is an architect and urban scientist. He leads the Cities team for Arup Germany in Berlin and researches at the Future Cities Laboratory of the ETH-Singapore Centre. His focus is on foundational technologies for digital twins and smart cities, as well on circularity and sustainable urbanisation using artificial intelligence.

Culture | Smart City Provocations is a series of live virtual dialogues and events exploring what could and should be the role of urban cultural transformation in the future smart city. It will bring together a transregional range of experts from arts practitioners, urban planners to thought leaders and researchers to share insights and offer fresh perspectives on how culture and cities are evolving before our eyes.
