July 2026

English

Dear Readers,

Tomorrow, the United States turns 250 — and we couldn’t let that milestone pass without a small bouquet of stories, gathered from both sides of the Atlantic.
Happy Birthday USA!

Even with Germany’s exit, the World Cup in North America is heating up — and our soccer special is still very much worth a look. Better yet, we’ve got three host nations to cheer for: the USA, Mexico, and Canada are all through to the Round of 16! So grab a seat, and keep cheering them on.

Our Snippets features an inspiring interview on Pride, Popcast’s July edition brings fresh songs for your next commute or coffee break, and Binge Fever serves up new picks for your next watch-list obsession.

That’s it from us for now — we hope you have a wonderful weekend, wherever in the world you’re reading this from.

Warmly,
Your Gegenüber Editorial Team

Soccer World Cup 2026

More Than a Game

Three countries, one tournament: the Men’s Soccer World Cup in North America becomes a stage for cultural encounters — between stadiums and streets, migration and myth, commerce and community. Even after Germany’s exit, our Gegenüber issue is worth exploring — available in German, English, French, and Spanish. And of course: cheering on the host nations: Canada, Mexico, and the US!

An Interview

What is Pride?

While the United States observes Pride Month in June, Germany celebrates its major Christopher Street Day (CSD) parades primarily in July and August — both marked by colorful events and growing visibility. Yet Pride celebrations are not without conflict: increasingly vocal voices in society are opposing them, deeming them unnecessary or even harmful. We asked queer people and allies what Pride means to them. Read the interview in our Gegenüber magazine.
