Over the course of his almost thirty-year career, German filmmaker Christian Petzold has cemented himself as a singular artist of the enigmatic. Blending melodrama, espionage, psychology, and political intrigue, his films delicately probe the often puzzling and tense relationships between his characters and their place in Germany’s history. In celebration of the upcoming release of his latest film Miroirs No. 3, the German Film Office is proud to co-present a retrospective featuring four of his films at Long Island’s Cinema Arts Centre.
The series opens with a 35mm screening of Petzold’s debut feature, The State I Am In, an investigation into the lives of exiled former left-wing terrorists who find themselves returning to an unfamiliar Germany. Following are two taut historical dramas, Barbara—also in 35mm—and Phoenix, which pair Petzold regulars Nina Hoss (Tár) and Ronald Zehrfeld (Two to One). The series closes with Transit, which joins Franz Rogowski (Passages) and Paula Beer (Miroirs No. 3) for a look into love and asylum in a time of fascism.Explore the whole program below! Not on Long Island? The State I Am In screens in 35mm at Metrograph on February 13 and 17 as part of their series Fugitive Days.
