Co-presented with Anthology Film Archives
Following the online streaming series “Konrad Wolf: Ways to Enlightenment” this autumn, the German Film Office is proud to present the first-ever complete survey of Wolf’s work in North America, in collaboration with Anthology Film Archives and the DEFA Film Library.
A director whose career represents a fascinating and crucial bridge between pre-war German cinema and the New German Cinema movement of the 1960s, Konrad Wolf would have turned 100 in October. Among favorites like Lissy and I Was Nineteen, audiences can celebrate Wolf’s centennial at screenings of his debut film Once Does Not Count, his formerly banned drama of East German uranium plant workers Sun Seekers, and his highly stylized adaption of The Little Prince, commissioned for the launch of color television in East Germany.
“What stands out in Wolf’s oeuvre is his brilliant capacity to merge modernist and realist cinematic traditions,” writes Angelos Koutsourakis, Professor of Film and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. “His best films invite us to reflect on our social responsibility and our actions as citizens, the need to use memories of a traumatic past to transform the future, and the compatibility of artistic autonomy with the social function of art.” Explore the program below!
